The Seated Ox began life as the smallest and weakest of his herd, a fragile newborn lovingly tended by an innkeeper and his son in Bethlehem. Though he struggled to grow and his future seemed uncertain, compassion spared his life and he was sheltered in the stable for the winter. One cold night, the ox watched as two weary travelers arrived and prepared a resting place in the straw. Drawn by a gentle glow, he approached and discovered a sleeping Baby lying in the manger. Understanding the Child’s need for warmth, the ox stepped close and offered his own, rewarded by the tender moment when the Baby opened His eyes and touched the ox’s face.
