Pierrot and Harlequin European Tapestry

Pierrot and Harlequin is a Belgian jacquard wall hanging. The artwork is by Cezanne. This piece shows two main characters from the Commedia dell’arte. A form of theater characterized by masked type characters which began in Italy in the 16th century. Originally, it was called commedia all'improviso due to the improvisational nature of many performances. Perrot is the sad clown often shown loosing is lover Columbine to Harlequin who is the prototype of the romantic hero, light hearted and resourceful, typically wearing the signature checkered motley.
