Mega Man 5 Battle Network Double Team is an enhanced Nintendo DS port that combines both Game Boy Advance versions—Team ProtoMan and Team Colonel—into a single game card. Released in late 2005, it follows protagonists Lan Hikari and his NetNavi, MegaMan.EXE, as they lead a team of "cyberheroes" to infiltrate the Dark Chip Factory and stop the evil organization Nebula from controlling the global internet.

Key Features & DS Enhancements

The DS version introduces several exclusive upgrades over the original GBA titles:

  • Dual Screen Integration: The bottom screen features a 3D animated model of MegaMan and provides constant access to the PET menu and area maps while exploring.
  • Touch Screen Controls: Players can use the stylus to quickly organize their battle chip folders by dragging and dropping chips.
  • Party Battle System: This new mechanic allows you to bring up to two additional Navis into standard battles to assist MegaMan with special attacks.
  • Microphone Support: In a "Critical" or "Pinch" state, you can shout into the DS microphone to "cheer" for MegaMan, which can trigger bonuses like HP recovery or a barrier.
  • GBA Slot Bonuses: Inserting original Mega Man Battle Network GBA cartridges into the DS's GBA slot unlocks special features, such as importing your old chip folders or changing MegaMan's appearance (e.g., Bass Cross).
  • Expanded Multiplayer: Supports wireless head-to-head battles and a tournament mode for up to 8 players.

Core Gameplay

The game blends isometric exploration with real-time strategic combat:

  • Real-World & Cyberspace: Players navigate the physical world as Lan and "jack in" to the internet to control MegaMan in virus-filled dungeons.
  • Grid-Based Battles: Combat occurs on a grid where players use "Battle Chips"—randomly drawn from a 30-chip deck—to execute special attacks and defensive moves.
  • Liberation Missions: These are unique, turn-based strategy missions where your team of Navis must liberate "Dark Panels" to reach and defeat an area's boss within a strict turn limit.
